Are we all perhaps linked by invisible bonds? Do the actions of one affect others, even if those others are far away? Our lives and the universe itself may be all part of a single mechanism in which all creatures and events are 'entangled' with one another.

Just A Reminder

Daylight Savings Time ends 2AM October 29, so don't forget to set your clocks back an hour!
I hate it when DST ends because now it will be dark by 4 or 5PM every evening....and it's just a reminder to me of the long cold dark winter ahead !

Videos Of The Week

All Hail King George !

With a stroke of his pen, the President has granted himself powers equal to those of his namesake, King George III of England, the royal despot we fought against over 200 years ago.

The right to seize anyone, at any time, without telling anyone of their arrest, to be detained without charges being filed or benefit of legal representation, for an indefinite period of time, simply by designating that person an " enemy combatant".

Today that person might be a terrorist, or someone who offers aid or support to a terrorist, but how long will it be before that person is someone who has dared to criticize the President and his policies? Perhaps that person's criticism will be interpreted as "support" for terrorism.

"Habeas corpus" is a fundamental right that dates back hundreds of years, first being codified into law in 1679 in England, but was used as early as 1305.

Habeas Corpus is a Latin term which means "you should have the body," and is a legal principle which requires that the government must present an accused and arrested person before an impartial judge in order to prove that there exists just cause to hold that person against his or her will.

Without the Writ of Habeas Corpus (traditionally called the "Great Writ"), a government could hold a person in jail for any length of time without having to prove that there is any good reason for doing so. Thus, if you are being held by the government, you can request a writ of habeas corpus and, if a court issues it, then the government must bring you to that court and demonstrate that they have arrested you for a compelling reason. If they cannot, then they must set you free.

Now I'm not a constitutional scholar, but here's a video of someone who is such an expert:

But if we just "stay the course" things are bound to get better....right?

With Election Day just 10 days away, let's hope the voters do not "stay the course", but throw some of the crew in Congress overboard and institute a "mutiny" against the Captain of the Ship of State, namely George Bush and his corrupt crew.

Tuesday TimeWasters

A game I've been wasting time with lately is one from Pogo.com. It's a slot machine game played "under the sea". I usually play it while I'm watching television since it doesn't require a great deal of concentration. And I like it better than other "slot" games because you can play 9 lines at once, giving you a better chance to win. Of course, all you actually win are 'tokens' , but tonight I broke the 100,000 mark in my total token count !! Woo-Hoo !
You do have to register to set up an account to play (email address/password) but you can play the games for free. You can set up a paid account for more options and no ads but don't have to. There are different 'rooms' you can play in but lately I have found one called "Rainbow Connection" which has mostly gay/lesbian players in it. Another room is called "Rainbow Rings". There's a chat room in the games too so you can talk to the other players if you want. Some of the conversations can be pretty funny sometimes, although I tend to just "lurk" and enjoy the other chatters' comments.
Check it out if you've got time to waste or just like to "multi-task" (does watching TV & playing games count?) .

Are You Addicted?

A recent study by the Stanford University School of Medicine found that more than one out of eight Americans exhibited at least one sign of addictive behavior in regards to the Internet.
So I checked out the symptoms to see how I compared to the people surveyed in the study.
Here's what one of the authors of the study had to say:

"We often focus on how wonderful the Internet is—how simple and efficient it can make things,” elaborated lead author Elias Aboujaoude, MD. “But we need to consider the fact that it creates real problems for a subset of people.”

Aboujaoude, clinical assistant professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences and director of Stanford’s Impulse Control Disorders Clinic, said that a small but growing number of Internet users are starting to visit their doctors for help with unhealthy attachments to cyberspace. He said these patients’ strong drive to compulsively use the Internet to check e-mail, make blog entries or visit Web sites or chat rooms, is not unlike what sufferers of substance abuse or impulse-control disorders experience: a repetitive, intrusive and irresistible urge to perform an act that may be pleasurable in the moment but that can lead to significant problems on the personal and professional levels.

Now I'll compare my internet use to the study's findings (my answers are in red) :
  • 13.7 percent (more than one out of eight respondents) found it hard to stay away from the Internet for several days at a time.
  • I find it hard to stay away for several hours at a time. For example, this past Friday evening my cable modem was out due to a storm--strong winds & rain apparently caused some damage. And it bugged me that I couldn't get online--but thankfully I had TV to occupy my time. Ahhh...good old loyal TV !
  • 12.4 percent stayed online longer than intended very often or often.
  • I have my computer on all the time when I'm home even if I'm watching TV or doing other things. Usually I'm surfing websites or playing a game while watching TV. And I constantly lose track of the time while on the computer. In fact, I was planning to go to bed over an hour ago, but here I am , still sitting here at the computer.
  • 12.3 percent had seen a need to cut back on Internet use at some point.
  • Personally I see no need to cut back on my Internet use. In fact, if it wasn't for having to waste time eating, sleeping, and going to work, I would have more time to spend online!
  • 8.7 percent attempted to conceal non-essential Internet use from family, friends and employers.
  • I don't attempt to hide my Internet use from anyone--I am very proud to discuss my websurfing skills. Besides I have no family, very few friends (except for my fantastic Internet friends) and couldn't care less about what my employer thinks.
  • 8.2 percent used the Internet as a way to escape problems or relieve negative mood.
  • I use the Internet to not only escape problems and relieve a negative mood, but to escape from reality itself as I find so-called "real life" to be rather boring and mundane in comparison to my "virtual life" on the web. I look forward to the day when I can put on a 'virtual reality' helmet and enter into a complete Internet-based world. I figure I can hook myself up to an intravenous feeding system to keep my body alive while I'm 'jacked in' to my computer. Perhaps I may need to hire a neighborhood boy to come in once a day to change my intravenous bottle to insure my nutritional needs are met.
  • 5.9 percent felt their relationships suffered as a result of excessive Internet use.
  • Before the Internet existed, I had no relationships and if it didn't exist now, I still probably wouldn't have any, so this is a moot point for me. If anything, I have had more contact with other people since I got online than I did before, even if it's only through email, IM chat or blogging. So I can honestly say my 'relationships' have not suffered.
So, in conclusion, it would seem (at least by this study's criteria) that I am addicted to the Internet. However, I would dispute this claim based on the following:

#1....I have always been an "information addict", seeking out sources of facts and data wherever I could--books, magazines, TV, newspapers, school, etc. Why I have this insatiable need to know as much as possible is a mystery to me. Since I have never earned a cent from the knowledge I've learned, but I still need to know. I do know that gaining new knowledge is one of the few things I find enjoyable in life. And the Internet is the greatest source for gathering information, so to me it's just a more convenient way to satisfy my curiousity. I still read books and magazines as well although I watch less TV than I used to before I got online.
#2....I don't consider it an "addiction", but more a "lifestyle choice". Some people like to ski or skydive or go to bars/clubs or have other hobbies that take up much of their time. Those people are "doers" who like to go 'do' things, whereas I am a "thinker". I just like to 'think' about whatever it is that happens to interest me at a particular time. And when you "think" about it, people like me are better for the planet because we don't waste as many resources as the "doers". Like gasoline to drive to various places to 'do' things. All I require is a small amount of electricity to run my laptop. And an occasional cup of tea or slice of pizza to keep me going.
#3....I am not wasting valuable money and resources trying to discover if some people are "addicted" to the Internet. Considering all the other much more dangerous addictions, such as alcohol or drugs (neither of which I have ever used) an Internet addiction seems like a rather insignificant problem. Ha--Take that, Stanford !!

So my final word on this subject is that I am not addicted to the Internet--I'm just in love with my computer !

C'mon now, my little 'puter, let's go to bed....we can have more fun surfing the web tomorrow. And if you're good, maybe I'll buy you some more memory or a nice shiny new harddrive. You'd like that, wouldn't you?

Paraskevidekatriaphobia

friday the thirteenth flaming image

Paraskevidekatriaphobia:
A morbid, irrational fear of Friday the 13th. Therapist Dr. Donald Dossey, whose specialty is treating people with irrational fears, coined the term. He claims that when you can pronounce the word you are cured.

There are many theories as to the origin of Friday the 13th being considered an unlucky day.

One theory, recently offered up as historical fact in the novel The Da Vinci Code, holds that it came about not as the result of a convergence, but a catastrophe, a single historical event that happened nearly 700 years ago.

The catastrophe was the decimation of the Knights Templar, the legendary order of "warrior monks" formed during the Christian Crusades to combat Islam. Renowned as a fighting force for 200 years, by the 1300s the order had grown so pervasive and powerful it was perceived as a political threat by kings and popes alike and brought down by a church-state conspiracy, as recounted by Katharine Kurtz in Tales of the Knights Templar (Warner Books: 1995):
"On October 13, 1307, a day so infamous that Friday the 13th would become a synonym for ill fortune, officers of King Philip IV of France carried out mass arrests in a well-coordinated dawn raid that left several thousand Templars — knights, sergeants, priests, and serving brethren — in chains, charged with heresy, blasphemy, various obscenities, and homosexual practices. None of these charges was ever proven, even in France — and the Order was found innocent elsewhere — but in the seven years following the arrests, hundreds of Templars suffered excruciating tortures intended to force 'confessions,' and more than a hundred died under torture or were executed by burning at the stake."
Some other theories can be found here....or here.

I'm not superstitious myself so have no fear of Friday the 13th. In fact it will almost certainly be a better day than today--Thursday the 12th--because at work "anything that could go wrong did go wrong", thus verifying "Murphy's Law" ! In fact it made me feel a bit like acting like that fella Jason from "Friday The 13th" as seen below:

Tuesday TimeWasters

This week I selected something that is a combination of politics and fun, since I promised in my last post I'd ease up on the politics and put up something fun. This is a bit of both.
It's a bunch of really cool animations by a political cartoonist named Mark Fiore.

I'm not even sure if I should call this week's item a "timewaster", because while you may spend time watching these animations, I wouldn't really consider them a waste of time.

Here's a brief bio from his site:
Mark Fiore creates animated political cartoons from an undisclosed location somewhere in San Francisco. His work appears regularly in a wide variety of online news web sites.

Here are links to a few recent animations that are especially good:

1-Profiteering !

2- The Adventures Of Knuckles

3-A Nation Remembers

4-The Hottest Hoax Around

It took me awhile to get these up because for some reason whenever I typed a line and hit 'return' some of the text on the previous line would disappear ! I kept having to re-type the same lines over. Some kind of strange Blogger glitch, I guess !
And it's not even Friday the 13th yet !!

Videos Of The Week

Yet again my videos feature some segments from MSNBC's Keith Olbermann. Actually it's just one piece but split into 2 videos due to the length restrictions on YouTube.
I know it must seem like I've got a crush on Keith based on all the videos of him I have posted recently, but I swear it's just that I respect and admire his honest, outspoken journalism.
Really
, that's all it is....but then, he is a good-looking man.

This next video is also political in nature, but a little more on the lighter side, from The Colbert Report.

Hmm....after seeing Dennis Hastert, maybe "lighter" wasn't the correct word to use.

I know I have been very political this past week especially, but I felt the World Can't Wait anti-Bush, anti-war protests were important to mention. I was a bit disappointed by the local turnout (around 100 people at most) and felt it could have been better organized, but at least the effort was made. There seemed to be little news coverage of the protests held around the country (virtually none, locally) but maybe the groundwork has been set for future events.

One thing I have found especially amusing the past couple of weeks is how Republicans are scrambling to dis-associate themselves from Bush and from the scandal surrounding Mark Foley.

Have you ever heard the expression "rats deserting a sinking ship"?

Apparently the pressure of the upcoming election is starting to get to some of them. Let's hope that "the ship of lies and corruption" they've been sailing on for the past eight years is rapidly taking on water and will soon sink down to the depths where it belongs.
I hope the voters of America help out in November by poking a few more holes in that ship's hull by voting out some of the "Repuli-pirates" who have taken over the country's ship of state.

And I promise to ease up a bit on the politics and find some fun stuff to post for your viewing pleasure.

The World Can't Wait--Local Rally

I attended the local anti-Bush peace rally held along with protests in many other US cities today-October 5th. The local event started out with about 30-40 people at a college campus, but grew to what I estimated (after doing a quick head count) to be about 100 persons after arriving at a meeting place in Washington Park. As we marched to the park, several people joined and there was a show of support in the form of horn-blowing and waving from passing vehicles.
Upon arriving in the park, there was a brief encounteer with an Albany police officer who was inquiring as to the nature of the rally and march. After hearing the details, he advised a route to take and provided escort (along with a couple other patrol cars) as we continued further downtown to rally on the steps of the State Capitol building.
At this point, many members of the group headed down to the Federal courthouse in downtown Albany where a jury was deliberating the fate of two local Muslim men who have been accused of supporting terrorism by laundering money, which turned out to be an FBI sting operation. The jury has yet to reach a decision in the case. A local NBC affiliated TV station (WNYT) has a video clip of the protest on their website. Others in the march remained at the state Capitol.
The two groups reunited as the protest continued on the sidewalk near the Capitol as the group held signs and chanted anti-Bush slogans to passing motorists, many of whom showed support by sounding their horns or waving.
One person was dressed up as "The Dim Reaper" wearing a Bush mask and another boy wore a gas mask along with an Army helmet decorated with a peace symbol.

I took a few photos and some brief video clips which I edited into the video below.

No Time To Waste !!

Usually I post my "Tuesday Timewasters" but this week I'm using this space to promote the October 5 protests against the corrupt policies of the Bush administration.

Someone at my job today saw one of the "World Can't Wait " flyers I printed up yesterday and said something about "losing a day's pay" by staying home from work to join in the protests.

But isn't giving up a single day's pay a small price to pay to protect the freedoms guaranteed to you by the Constitution?
The Founding Fathers of the United States pledged "our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor" in signing the Declaration Of Independence in their struggle against another despot named "George".
Stand up and show the world what America really stands for--not what the current administration in Washington. D.C. presents as their version of "America" !

The Party Of "Family Values" ???

The following list was posted on The Huffington Post website yesterday....I couldn't believe just how long the list was as I scrolled down the page. And this is the party of "family values" who thinks that gay marriage would destroy society. Do any of these so-called "moral crusaders" actually follow their own dictates?
